In the world of road tunnels, their unique acoustic environments command a sophisticated approach to sound management. At the core of ensuring effective communication in these subterranean conduits is the Public Address (PA) system. Given the unique challenges of sound propagation in tunnels, specialized modelling, including advanced ray tracing techniques, is fundamental for achieving clarity and audibility. In this article, we delve into the intricacies of PA system modelling for road tunnels, emphasizing parameters like STI, STIPA, the significance of ray tracing, and addressing the obsolescence of RASTI.

The Crucial Role of a Tunnel’s PA System

Clear communication within a tunnel setting is paramount. Whether conveying emergency alerts or routine traffic directives, the PA system stands as the primary medium for transmitting essential messages. However, the pronounced reverberations caused by tunnel construction materials, such as concrete and metal, can diminish the effectiveness of standard PA systems. This is where specialized modelling, rooted in both experience and advanced techniques, proves invaluable.

The Necessity for Advanced Ray Tracing Modelling

Traditional statistical methods of sound modelling often fall short in accurately predicting how sound propagates within the challenging environment of a tunnel. Ray tracing modelling, on the other hand, offers a more precise representation by simulating how sound waves travel and interact with various surfaces. This technique, therefore, is essential in achieving a more accurate and effective PA system design for road tunnels.

STI(Road Tunnel) Speech Intelligibility

The image  above shows the subjective grading of STI based on its numerical value. The image also shows STI values that can likely be achieved within a road tunnel environment due to the nature of the surface materials of the road tunnel.

Deciphering STI and STIPA

  • STI (Speech Transmission Index): This index, measured on a scale from 0 (bad) to 1 (excellent), gauges a PA system’s ability to transmit speech effectively across diverse environments. Achieving scores closer to 1 in a tunnel is a formidable challenge, given the intrinsic acoustic challenges.

  • STIPA (Speech Transmission Index for Public Address systems): Tailored specifically for public address systems, STIPA provides a nuanced analysis of speech clarity. It too uses a scale of 0 to 1 for measurement.

  • RASTI (Rapid Speech Transmission Index): Once the go-to tool for assessing PA systems in public spaces, RASTI has now been rendered obsolete, with the industry leaning more towards STIPA for a more comprehensive understanding.

Delivering High-Quality Acoustics for the Audio Lab of Libre Wireless Technologies

After many years we would like to discuss and showcase one of our first and most challenging projects. Libre Wireless Technologies, is a leading company in wireless audio streaming technology. The challenge was to provide our expertise as Acoustics, Noise, and Vibration consultants for their audio lab project, which was left unsatisfactorily halfway done by a turnkey contractor. Our team took this as an opportunity to showcase our skills and deliver a high-quality acoustic lab for our client. The greatest achievement for us was that their lab was certified by their partner Amazon, USA without a hitch. Yes the same company responsible for the voice Assistant ALEXA.

Using Advanced Sound Insulation and Sound Absorption Software

We used advanced sound insulation and sound absorption software to provide a detailed analysis of the acoustic environment in the audio lab. Our team created custom acoustic absorption elements to reduce echo and reverberation. Almost all acoustic absorption elements were custom made, including the door, which was designed by us and realized by the clients’ onsite tradespeople with the help of an engineering firm to ensure its structural reliability. Every detail, including the door sealing mechanism, sound insulation performance, and aesthetics, was considered. The client trusted us to deliver the most stunning lab, and we exceeded their expectations.

Designing the Custom Door

The audio lab featured a double door entry system with a vestibule. We designed a custom door that was acoustically sealed to prevent any sound leakage. The door designed weighed nearly 400 kg with superb sound insulation properties. The door was made by the clients tradespeople with an acoustic insulation core with several composite layers and a painted plywood panelling finish to reduce sound transmission. The door included two flaps at the front and back and three stepped layers of sealing to ensure best sound insulation performance.

Selection of HVAC and Ducting Noise Control

We used noise power data from the HVAC manufacturer to select the appropriate cassette for the lab. The ducting noise control was designed by us to ensure a quiet environment for the lab’s testing purposes. We considered every service penetration for electrical, data cables, fire protection, and other utilities to ensure complete acoustic isolation.

Supervision Services and Cost Savings

Our team supervised the removal of the old faulty structures and reused the old material for the project, saving costs for the client. We worked closely with the client to achieve the stringent reverberation time and noise floor, which had a narrow tolerance for the lab’s testing purposes. Our expertise and attention to detail paid off as the client received certification from their partner to run the lab for testing purposes.

Today, April 26th, 2023 marks the International Noise Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the harmful effects of noise pollution on human health. At dB Acoustique, we are committed to promoting healthy and safe acoustic environments. In this blog post, we will be discussing one of the most common health issues associated with noise pollution – Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

Effects of Noise Pollution

Exposure to excessive noise levels over an extended period can lead to various adverse effects on human health. These effects include stress, high blood pressure, sleep disturbance, and hearing impairment. While some of these effects may be temporary, exposure to high noise levels can cause permanent hearing damage, which can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

NIHL is a form of hearing damage caused by exposure to loud sounds or noise. NIHL occurs when the sensory cells in the inner ear, responsible for converting sound waves into electrical signals, are damaged due to excessive noise exposure. The degree of hearing loss depends on the intensity and duration of noise exposure. The effects of NIHL can range from temporary tinnitus to permanent hearing impairment.

Noise in Factories and Workplaces

Noise pollution is prevalent in factories and workplaces, where loud machinery, tools, and equipment generate high levels of noise. Workers in these environments are at high risk of developing NIHL, and employers must take measures to protect their employees’ hearing. Implementing hearing conservation programs, providing hearing protection devices, and reducing noise levels through engineering controls are some of the ways to prevent NIHL in the workplace.

Noise in Pubs and Clubs

Pubs and clubs are often characterized by loud music and social gatherings, creating an environment of high noise levels. Exposure to such environments over a prolonged period can lead to NIHL. Pub and club owners can take measures to mitigate noise levels by installing acoustic treatments and soundproofing materials to reduce noise transmission.

Conclusion

NIHL is a serious health issue caused by noise pollution that can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. At dB Acoustique, we provide various services, including noise surveys, vibration measurement, and sound insulation testing, among others, to help clients identify and mitigate noise pollution. Introduction:

Noise pollution is a common problem in industries that use pumps, causing disturbances to workers and nearby residents. However, this can be remedied with the right pump noise control solutions. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the various techniques for controlling pump noise, including the use of vibration isolation and bellows, and how they can be applied to different types of pumps. We will also touch on similar solutions that can be used for sewage treatment plants.

Vibration Isolation:

One of the most effective ways to reduce pump noise is through vibration isolation. This involves separating the pump from its support structure to prevent the transmission of vibration and noise. There are several types of vibration isolation methods, including springs, elastomeric mounts, and air mounts. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on the specific application.

Bellows:

An ‘Expansion Joint’ also known as a ‘Bellow’

Another method for reducing pump noise is the use of bellows at inlets and outlets. Bellows can be used to prevent force transmission into the plumbing, thereby reducing noise levels. Bellows can be made of various materials such as rubber, neoprene, and stainless steel. The choice of material depends on the operating conditions and the type of pump.

Types of Pumps:

Different types of pumps require different noise control solutions. For example, centrifugal pumps generate noise due to their high-speed rotation, while positive displacement pumps generate noise due to the pulsation of fluid. Understanding the noise generation mechanism of the pump is key to choosing the right noise control solution.

Sewage Treatment Plants:

Similar noise control solutions can be used for sewage treatment plants. The pumps used in these plants generate significant noise levels, which can cause disturbance to nearby residents. By implementing the right noise control measures, these noise levels can be significantly reduced, creating a more comfortable environment for everyone.

Conclusion:

Pump noise control solutions are essential for reducing noise pollution in industrial settings. Vibration isolation and the use of bellows are effective techniques that can be used to achieve this goal. By understanding the noise generation mechanism of different types of pumps, it is possible to choose the right noise control solution for each application. Similar noise control measures can also be applied to sewage treatment plants. Contact us at dB Acoustique to learn more about our noise control solutions for pumps and other industrial equipment.

Introduction:

Sound is an integral part of our lives, whether we realize it or not. From the chirping of birds to the hum of traffic, sound surrounds us every day. However, have you ever wondered how sound works? In this article, we will take a closer look at the science behind sound and provide you with a better understanding of how it works.

What is Sound?

Sound is a form of energy that travels through the air in waves. It is created when an object vibrates, causing the air around it to vibrate as well. These vibrations travel through the air as sound waves and are detected by our ears as sound.

How is Sound Measured?

Sound is measured in decibels (dB), which is a unit of sound intensity. The decibel scale ranges from 0 dB, which is the quietest sound that the human ear can hear, to 194 dB, which is the loudest sound that can occur. For reference, a normal conversation typically measures around 60 dB, while a jet engine can reach up to 140 dB.

How Does Sound Travel?

Sound travels through the air as a longitudinal wave. This means that the particles in the air vibrate in the same direction as the sound wave is traveling. The speed of sound varies depending on the medium it is traveling through, with sound travelling faster through denser materials. For example, sound travels faster through water than through air.

Why is Sound Important?

Sound plays a crucial role in our lives. It allows us to communicate with one another, and it also serves as a warning system for potential danger. Additionally, sound has a profound impact on our emotions and can influence our moods.

How Can We Control Sound?

Controlling sound is an important aspect of creating a comfortable and productive environment. At dB Acoustique, we specialize in providing consulting and design solutions for acoustics. Giving ‘sound’ advice …

Sharing knowledge with clients, peers and students.

After completing his Engineering (Hons) in Mechatronics, from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, Arun Iyengar,
Founder of dBAcoustique discovered sound.

“A person does not hear sound only through the ears; he hears sound through every pore of his body. It permeates the entire being … ” Though these words of a Sufi teacher were proclaimed in a more spiritual context, they resonated deeply with Arun. He went on to do several acoustic-related courses, including:
• Acoustics for Engineers (University of Auckland)
• Acoustics and Noise Control (University of
Toronto)
• Introduction to Mechanical Vibration (IIT Roorkee)
• Principles of Vibration Control & Noise
Management and Control (IIT Kanpur)
• Architectural Acoustics (IIT Kharagpur)
Translating his learning into practical experience, Arun worked as an Acoustic Design Engineer in a couple of reputed firms. Here, he successfully managed acoustic projects right from the initial stages to testing and commissioning, including consulting on large office spaces, hotels, residential towers etc…

He has also designed spaces such as auditoriums, convention halls, lecture halls, etc. using Odeon and EASE acoustic simulation software.

Affiliations & Professional Certifications

Arun is an Associate Member of the Institute of Acoustics (UK) and The Institution of Engineers (India), where he is also registered as a Chartered Engineer. Arun is also a Life Member of the Acoustical Society of India. He was also formerly a Certified Technology Specialist with AVIXA – the trade association representing the professional audiovisual and information communications industries worldwide.

Constantly learning, constantly growing…

Arun believes in continuous learning. He is
constantly honing his skills through new courses, attending workshops and conferences and more recently sharing his knowledge through guest lectures at various architecture schools across Bangalore, India.
